BBB Warns: Most Donations To Heart Charity Stay With Fundraising Firms

The BBB is warning donors about Heart Support of America Inc., a charity that uses fundraising firms that keep 90 percent of each donation.

Hearts abound in February - and not just because today is Valentine's Day. It's also heart month, and the Better Business Bureau has a warning about a heart charity that's using fundraisers who keep about 90 percent of donations.

Heart Support of America Inc., based in Knoxville, Tenn., has been mailing letters to residents of the St. Louis area recently. The letters offer 'free' Heart Attack First Aid Kids and asks for donations of $10 to $25.

The BBB found that about 90 percent of the money donated to Heart Support went to professional fundraising firms. Less than three cents on the dollar was used for direct aid to heart patients, their families or heart-related charities.More details about Heart Support are outlined in today's BBB press release.

The BBB's Standards of Charity Accountability recommend that a charity spend no more than 35 percent of contributions on fundraising. The BBB applies those standards in deciding whether a charity qualifies as a BBB Accredited Charity. BBB Charity Reviews show the results of our evaluations and are available on our website.
