Google Maps Visits The Magic House for Indoor Mapping
Google visits The Magic House to take part in exclusive indoor mapping and imaging collection.
The Magic House had a different kind of visitor on Monday. Instead of kids, families and school groups we had a little machine touring our entire Museum and capturing images along the way! The Google Trolley, one of Google Maps’ latest technological ventures to capture hard to photograph indoor images, visited The Magic House to help create an indoor map of the Museum. The trolley is outfitted with a few components that are key to collecting indoor imagery: a panoramic camera to collect 360-degree views, lasers to capture distances to walls, motion sensors to track Trolley’s position, a hard drive to store data and a laptop to operate the system. The machine is fairly small but quite robust in what it can do! This little machine is able to give a full view inside almost every room of the Museum. In a few months, visitors will be able to go to Google Maps and actually tour the inside of the museum to help plan their visit! Once inside the museum, you will be able to navigate around rooms freely with the navigation arrows or simply click on a distant spot to jump to a closer view.
Our team is so excited about the opportunity to showcase all of the amazing things that we offer here! We believe this will be a great tool for families to use when planning their visits.
And while this new system has captured some amazing places across the country and the world – from the Grand Canyon to botanical gardens in South Africa, it appears that The Magic House may be the first visit for St. Louis with this new system! More to come once our indoor map of The Magic House is available
to the public!
