Greentree Pharmacy Participating in Million Hearts – Heart to Heart Screenings

As part of Greentree Pharmacy’s membership in RxAlly, a new performance network of more than 22,000 pharmacies nationwide, free Heart to Heart in-pharmacy blood pressure screenings will be offered during the month of January and February.  Part of Million Hearts™, the Heart to Heart screenings focus on the prevention and control of high blood pressure across the United States.

Launched by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Million Hearts™ is a nationwide initiative aimed at preventing one million heart attacks and strokes in the U.S. over the next five years.

Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare provider in the community and are trained as medication experts.  By pharmacists taking the time to do blood pressure screenings for our patients, we can identify potential problems such as uncontrolled blood pressure and work with the patient’s physician to recommend drug therapy or changes in medication.

For the millions of people diagnosed with heart disease, medication is their primary source of treatment. However, research shows that more than half of patients don’t take their medication as prescribed. These Heart to Heart local screenings are an important reminder of the useful resources that local pharmacists provide.

Among hypertension patients, an estimated 89,000 premature deaths per year could be avoided with appropriate medication and treatment.  This is especially alarming considering that high blood pressure is easy to diagnose and treat making it one of the most preventable causes of death in the United States.
