KHS Class of 2013 After Graduation Party - Kickoff!

Many people are blogging about the Cardinals, the election, and Kirkwood football. All exciting events, no doubt. I, however, have my mind focused on an exciting event that will take place exactly 7 months from now - the Kirkwood High School Class of 2013 After Graduation Party - May 18, 2013 at Kirkwood High.

A dedicated group of parents are already busy planning the AGP, as most fondly call it. Our theme this year is "Going Places" and we will transform the KHS gymnasiums into a tour of the biggest cities in the US. 

Over 85% of our graduating class is expected to attend the AGP, that's more than 350 seniors.

But this is not just a senior class event - this is a community event. This party would not be possible without the support and generosity of many businesses and organizations within the Kirkwood School District. Yes, it is a big party with a big budget and lots of prizes, all designed to keep our newest graduates safe on what can be one of the most dangerous nights of their lives.

The legend behind the AGP, or Project Graduation as it's called in some communities, starts in Maine in 1979. That year the Oxford Hills area experienced seven alcohol and other drug-related teen deaths during the commencement season.  As a result of this tragic experience, the schools and communities in Oxford Hills offered their students an alternative to the “traditional” graduation night drinking and driving temptations that all too often end in tragedy. They called the party, “Project Graduation.”  By 1986, Project Graduation activities were held in 50 states. 

When did we begin the tradition in Kirkwood? I don't know, but hopefully someone will respond to this post and tell me.
