What/Who: The Webster University Symphony Orchestra continues its 2011-12 season with a special event, “Strings at the Sheldon.” This unique concert, under the baton of conductor, Paul G. Davis, will feature the sound of the warm and soaring string musicians of the Webster University Symphony Orchestra.
The program will open with Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances, which is a rich orchestration of songs and dances popular of the late 17th century. While resounding the style of the ancient period, the work was written to showcase Respighi’s talent in rich orchestration developed in the late 19th century. The program continues with an original setting of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3. Performed with original orchestration of only 11 musicians, this presentation will immerse the listener with the precision and excitement of the grand Baroque master. The program concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, one of the composer’s most revered works for string orchestra.
