10 Tips to Eat Healthy on Vacation

1. Resist the Urge to Splurge: eat regularly throughout the day- eat something every 2-3 hours to avoid going into a meal completely starved with potential to overeat. 2. Have it Your Way: ask your server to have your meal prepared the way you want it. Menu items can often times be prepared or dressed a different way than listed on the menu. 3. Enjoy the Food: you’re on vacation don’t deprive yourself of enjoyable food. Keep in mind “MODERATION.” 4. Walking is Your Secret Weapon: sightseeing is typically on the agenda of every vacation, which means you’re walking all day, every day. This seems to offset any extra calories you may consume. 5. A Treat a Day: how can you resist stopping for ice cream with the kids? YOU DON’T! Just keep your treats to once a day. After that, opt for a healthy choice instead. 6. Better Choices on the Menu: make healthful choices that appeal to you at the restaurant or fast food whenever possible. If its not appealing, you won’t feel satisfied and will splurge on other choices. 7. Share your meal around the table: restaurants provide extremely large portion sizes that often can be split between two people. Even if you don’t think the meal is “healthy” it is better split between two than eating the whole meal yourself. 8. Water is Your Friend: traveling can dehydrate you, and so can being in the sun more than your body is used to. Bring water everywhere you go to stay hydrated. 9. Remember Fruits and Vegetables: make an effort to get in 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day. It will make meals seem more filling and satisfying. 10. Eat When You’re Hungry and Stop When You’re Comfortable: it sounds simple, but many people don’t pay attention to hunger cues. Resist the urge to continue to each just because you have the “I’m on vacation” mindset.
