Aging in Place

Watch for the signs that it's time to evaluate your loved one's needs

In the past, elderly people moved in with their adult children or to assisted living facilities and nursing homes when they could no longer live independently or safely. Today, the preferred option is to remain in their own home or a home of their choice for as long as possible.

Watch for these signs that it’s time to evaluate your loved one’s needs:

  • Reduced vision or hearing
  • Decreased physical mobility, muscle strength and endurance for basic activities
  • Risk of falls due to increased balance problems, medications, etc.
  • Frequency of illnesses and medical issues
  • Significant changes in memory
  • Visible changes in physical appearance and grooming
  • Inability to handle basic tasks, such as paying bills and managing medicines
  • References to loneliness, sadness or boredom

“Aging in place” is a desirable choice when families can openly discuss their preferences and resources and then take appropriate actions. Involving the elderly person’s healthcare provider in decision making is also important.
