How To Sleep As You Age

Tips for overcoming insomnia and sleeping better over age 50

recognizes that many people experience changes in sleeping patterns as they age. Although these changes are a normal part of aging, disturbed sleep, waking up tired every day and other symptoms of insomnia are may not be normal.

Sleeping well is essential to physical health and well-being. For older adults, a good night’s sleep is especially important because it helps improve concentration and memory formation, allows the body to repair cell damage that occurs during the day, and refreshes the immune system. Seniors who don’t sleep well are more likely to suffer from depression, attention and memory problems, or excessive daytime sleepiness. · Medications

· Lack of exercise

· Psychological stress or psychological disorders

· Sleep disorders, including apnea

Improving daytime habits leads to better sleep:

· Be engaged. Social activities provide an increased activity level, preparing the body for a good night’s sleep.

· Improve your mood. A more positive outlook can reduce sleep problems.

· Exercise regularly. Exercise releases endorphins that can boost mood and reduce stress, depression and anxiety.

· Get sun exposure. Bright sunlight helps regulate melatonin and sleep-wake cycles.

· Limit caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. These substances are especially hard on sleep.

If a nap is what you need:

· Keep it short. Limit yourself to 15-45 minutes, though naps as short as five minutes can improve alertness and certain memory processes.

· Nap early in the afternoon. Napping late in the day can disrupt nighttime sleep.

· Be comfortable. Pick a comfortable environment, preferably with limited light and noise.
