Osteoporosis: A Silent Disease

Breaking a bone is often the first sign of disease

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and loss of bone tissue that may lead to weak and fragile bones. If you have osteoporosis, you have an increased risk for fractured bones, particularly in the hip, spine and wrist.

Osteoporosis is often considered to be a condition that frail elderly women develop. However, the damage from osteoporosis begins much earlier in life. Because peak bone density is reached by approximately 25 years of age, it is important to build strong bones by that age so the bones will remain strong later in life.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in four senior-aged women in the U.S. has osteoporosis. About six percent of men aged 65+ also have the bone-thinning condition.

Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease because you cannot feel your bones getting weaker. Breaking a bone is often the first sign that you have osteoporosis, or you may notice that you are getting shorter or your upper back is curving forward. If you are experiencing height loss or your spine is curving, be sure to talk to your healthcare professional right away.

The goal of treating osteoporosis is to prevent further bone loss or increase bone density. A combination of lifestyle changes and medications are typically recommended. Lifestyle changes may include quitting smoking, cutting down on alcohol consumption, getting regular exercise and eating a balanced diet rich in calcium and Vitamin D. Calcium and Vitamin D supplements are often encouraged for those with risk factors for the disease. Ask your health care professional for help in developing a plan specific to your needs.
