St. Joe Opener: 5-0 Blanking of Oakville

There’s no business like show business

The St. Joe Angels brought the curtain up on the 2013 season, and in grand fashion.

Five different Angels pounded the ball past Oakville junior Tina Haberberger for a 5-0 shutout to open the season.

Oakville already has two games in the books. They lost their opener to Jackson (Mo) and beat rival Mehlville.

Lexi Boschert, Ali Magaletta, Kaley Nieters, Kelly McLaughlin and Haley Kavanaugh all scored for the Angels. The first half featured 2 goals, and 3 goals in the second.

Actually, Haberberger played a very good game, with little support from her defense. “She did a good job for us. It could have been worse,” said veteran coach Dave Robben of Oakville.

This could be the season on the brink for St. Joe. Last year, the Angels took third place in the state championships, and nearly the entire cast, including all the main scorers from 2012 returned.

“Our team was very fit. They looked very composed right from the first whistle. Courtney Sweetin (assistant coach) and I were impressed. For the first game of the season, we were both impressed.”

“Our goalie (Tina Haberberger) made some big saves. She came out a couple of times and did really well. It was 5-0 and it could have been worse than that.”

“St. Joe is a get team. We have one senior. They finished third in state. They are a good team.”

“We have just one senior. We’re going to find out quickly who can play. Our spring break is next week. We have one more game this week. We’re kinda just experimenting at this point.”

What’s next:

St. Joe faces Notre Dame at home at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Friday, they travel to Hazelwood West for a 4 p.m. game.

Oakville has a home Thursday game with Visitation Academy, then they are off through
Easter.
