Tips for Plane Travel for Seniors

Planning is key to a fun, safe journey

The holidays right around the corner, the most popular tourist travel time of the year. Whether you are accompanying a senior on a trip or just doing the planning, here are some important tips to keep in mind:

· Book a non-stop flight, if possible, and avoid regional jets. When booking a trip, non-stop flights are strongly preferred over connecting flights in order to minimize the chance of a missed connection and to reduce total travel time. Also, try to avoid smaller regional jets, especially at airports that do not offer a jet bridge. Passengers on these flights typically must climb a flight of stairs.

· When you find the flight you want to book, call customer service to find out if any senior discounts are available.

· When booking a flight, choose the right disability options. Some airlines allow passengers to select disability options at the time of booking. Others require customers to contact the airline by phone to request these items separately.

· Request a wheelchair at the curb if needed, and ask for someone to push the wheelchair. This person will get you to the right line and will be with you as you go through security.

· Tell security if you have any artificial joints. If you have a card given to you following surgery, have it on hand.

· Travel during the right time of the day. Traveling early in the morning or at night can be exhausting to seniors. Mid-morning or afternoon departures might be preferable.

· Travel with family, a friend or a companion. It is best if seniors do not travel alone, if possible. Long flights, communication issues and the sheer logistics of travel are made easier when traveling with someone else.

· Carry on all medications in their original containers. Never place important medications in checked luggage. This keeps medications within reach in the event of a flight delay or a lost suitcase.

· Choose the right line at security. Passengers in wheelchairs, and their companions, can receive priority service from the TSA, much like those with elite status in airline programs. Adults over 75 do not have to take off their light jacket or shoes. Other benefits might be available – ask the TSA agent at the head of the line.
