Maplewood Business: Schaefer Shell

Schaefer Shell has been a mainstay in Maplewood for years. The owner told me about the day-to-day operations and what he thinks of the changing landscape on the corner of Big Bend and Manchester.

Schaefer Shell has been on the corner of Big Bend and Manchester for more than a decade. The first thing I noticed when walking into Schaefer Shell was the friendly atmosphere. The clerk welcomed me and asked how he could assist me while the owner, Gene Kohler, was explaining to a customer the work done on his vehicle. The employees have all been a part of the Schaefer Shell family for years and are skilled and knowledgeable at their trade. The crew boasts two ASE certified technicians and one apprentice that combine for years and years of experience that insure that your vehicle is in capable hands.

Gene, who runs the day-to-day operations, has been working in the automotive industry his whole life. The one thing that I hear about Gene is that he is “honest”. To me the most important thing that I could ask for in dealing with a mechanic is honesty because I’m clueless when it comes to cars.

Many people have been concerned that the proposed move of the Quiktrip will hurt this long standing Maplewood business. Gene is not worried saying “We don’t sell sandwiches and they don’t do repairs”. Schaefer Shell considers itself first and foremost a repair shop that happens to sell gas. While they may not always be able to compete with other’s gas prices, they offer the only full service gas experience in Maplewood.
