Brentwood Grad Ed Wright Retiring, Position to Be Filled With Teacher Shuffle

A Brentwood High School teacher known for his Hawaiian shirts and Converse All-Stars has announced his retirement.

Social studies teacher Ed Wright has been at Brentwood for nine years, and teaching a total of 20.

Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Dr. Ed Johnson said Wright made the announcement at a Christmas party.

“You never know what you’re missing until you’re reminded you’re going to be losing this individual and all of a sudden you go into a reflective mode,” Johnson said.

Johnson said Wright will be impossible to replace.

“He understands so much about the school,” he said. “Being a graduate from Brentwood High School, he truly understands what Brentwood is about, so he’s able to help us keep those tradition that are much valued to the community.”

Brentwood Superintendent of Schools David Faulkner said because some teachers have multiple certifications they’re able to move to different positions, so the district won’t have to hire a replacement for Wright.

“A teacher who had been hired as a social studies teacher, but was teaching PE, took the full time social studies position,” Faulkner said. “That created a PE position which we posted and we filled with (football coach) Keith Herring. Then as a part of Prop K, we were looking at the analysis of the position Keith Herring had before, which was an in school suspension position. We decided we would not fill that position.”

He said in school suspension will be handled in a different way in-house.

“We did do some cutting back, but it was a different position by the time we moved some things around,” Faulkner said.
