Assistant Chief: "Not a Good Ending"

A standoff in Brentwood late Sunday night ended with a suicide.

A six hour standoff between Brentwood and St. Louis County police and an unidentified man with a gun inside his home ended with one man dead on Sunday night. Police confirmed it was a suicide.

"This is not a good ending," said Maj. Dan Fitzgerald, assistant chief of Brentwood Police Department.

The 2400 block of Bremerton Road was closed between 6 p.m. and midnight while a county SWAT team surrounded the home. Police were alerted by a phone call from a family member that the man had a gun and was suicidal.

Brentwood police called for backup because the man held a gun and wasn't in the right frame of mind, Fitzgerald said. The man lives with family but was in the home by himself at the time, he said.

Details were scarce for most of the night. Several residents gathered near the corner of Litzsinger and Bremerton roads and waited until police allowed them to go back to their homes. Resident Pat Carroll had waited since 7 p.m.

"I went shopping, went out to eat and still can't get in," Carroll said around 10 p.m.

Police started leaving the scene at 11:53 p.m. while residents slowly returned to their homes.
