Sutton Fire Reignites

An oil tank in the basement leaked and caught fire around 6 a.m.

The , and departments from Webster Groves, and St. Louis City responded to a reignited fire in Maplewood this morning.

The dentist's office fire in the home on Sutton Boulevard totally destroyed the 1904 home in a .

Maplewood fire chief Terry Merrell said this morning that they believe the original fire was caused by an oil-fired furnace in the basement.

"There's a 150-gallon tank that holds the fuel oil that runs the furnace," he said. "We believe the tank leaked out, spread oil all over the basement floor and reignited, about 6 a.m."

He said they were using high-expansion foam. "It's the best thing to put out hidden space fires, which is what we have, and also the flamable liquids."
