Ashes to Go

Churches Bring Ash
Wednesday to the Streets

On Ash Wednesday, March 5, Affton and Calvary Presbyterian Churches will be offering “Ashes to
Go,” a new approach to a centuries-old Christian tradition, from 7-9 a.m. at Affton
Presbyterian’s alley entrance (9217 Gravois Rd) and 4-6 p.m. in front of Calvary
Presbyterian (3400 Lemay Ferry Rd).

Interested passers-by are welcome to walk or pull up in
their car to receive ashes and/or a prayer as they begin the season of Lent, a
time in Christian tradition for reflection and repentance in preparation for
the celebration of Easter.  For
centuries, Christians have received a cross of ashes on the face at the
beginning of that season as a reminder of mortal failings and an invitation to
receive God’s forgiveness.  Ashes to Go
provides the opportunity to participate in that tradition for people who have
lost their connection to a church, or have never participated before.

For those who prefer to begin the season of Lent with a
service of worship, the churches will share a simple supper and worship service
that will include the imposition of ashes and communion that evening beginning
at 6:30 p.m. (the service will begin at 7:15) at Calvary Presbyterian Church.
