Census Reveals Smaller Families, Fewer Children in Mehlville

The latest release is part of an ongoing series of information dumps from the U.S. Census Bureau as it compiles information from the 2010 census conducted last spring. The earlier release of Missouri data gave basic information about the population of the state and communities within Missouri, broken down by general categories of race and ethnicity.

In the initial census release, by 1.5 percent over the last 10 years. That data shows that Mehville had 28,822 residents in 2000, compared with only 28,380 in 2010—a decrease of 442. Mehlville's numbers are in line with the overall trend in St. Louis County, which had a 1.7 percent decline in population.

Among other things, Thursday's release provides further breakdowns in age groups in the state and its local communities. It also breaks down the Latino/Hispanic community into several nations of origin and gives more details about the nature and makeup of the 2.4 million households in the state.

In 2000, there were almost 2,000 more females in the area than males. However, 10 years later, men are catching up with only 1,446 more females than males in Mehlville. 

The average family size is 2.87 people, down slightly from 2.9 in 2000 with 541 fewer children in families in 2010.

"Family households" consist of a householder and one or more other people related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption. They do not include same-sex married couples even if the marriage was performed in a state issuing marriage certificates for same-sex couples. Same-sex couple households are included in the family households category if there is at least one additional person related to the householder by birth or adoption. Same-sex couple households with no relatives of the householder present are tabulated in nonfamily households. "Nonfamily households" consist of people living alone and households which do not have any members related to the householder.
