Good morning, Mehlville!

Welcome to our new column that will help you get through the weekday. Every Monday through Friday at 6 a.m., we'll tell you everything ranging from gas prices and traffic alerts to events around town and stories we're working on. Lastly, we'll sign off with something fun to kickstart your morning.

• Weather: It is hot in here! Today is supposed to have a high of 97 degrees and a heat index of 105. Tonight will still be hot but mostly clear— perfect for fireworks. Saturday will also be hot with a high of 98 degrees and a 30 percent chance of rain coming on Sunday. For the Fourth, a chance of showers with a high around 92, according to the National Weather Service. 
  
  
• Gas: Prices are all over the board to start the weekend. Sam's Club is at $3.26 while Quick Trip and Phillips 66 are at $3.39, according to stlouisgasprices.com. 
  
  
• Start the holiday weekend right with the tonight. From 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., bring the whole family down to Jefferson Barracks for a festival featuring food, local businesses, games and other fun. Patch will be there, so stop by our table if you see us! After the sun sets, stick around for fireworks at the Veterans' Memorial Amphitheater. 
  
  
• Later today, we'll have a story about Congressman Todd Akin's ice cream social in Oakville last night and hear from weekly columnist Vicki Englund about unincorporation, St. George and how it relates to Mehlville.
