Mad Hungarian Shows Support of National Guard Troops
Former Cardinal Al Hrabosky visited Jefferson Barracks troops last week.
Al Hrabosky, a former Cardinals relief pitcher, is known for his charismatic character both on the mound and now as Cardinals' game commentator.
However, most fans don’t know that the "Mad Hungarian" served six years in the Army Reserve with units in California.
To show his support for the troops, Hrabosky visited the 1138th Transportation Company at Jefferson Barracks last Friday. The troop is set to deploy to Afghanistan after May 1.

“Today’s National Guard units are right there on the front lines every time our troops are put into harm’s way,” he said in a release. “It’s a different era today with multiple deployments. These soldiers are really putting themselves out there to serve our country.”
Hrabosky signed autographs, shared stories and took photos with the soldiers.

“He’s really nice and he seemed genuinely interested in the 1138th,” said Sgt. Calvina Cook with the 1138th Transportation Company.
“I appreciate him taking not only the time out to speak to us today but to speak with us while we’re deployed. Knowing that he served, and years later is still interested in what the troops are doing now is really good to know,” Cook said.
The unit is also being honored this summer on a special Fox Sports Midwest and American Forces Network game. The program, called This One’s For You, will feature soldiers in the company live from Afghanistan.
Hrabosky also talked about the benefits youth can gain in joining the military.
“I look at the young people today struggling to find a job in this tough economy, and I think of the military,” he said. “If you’re trying to find a place in life, I think the military will help you learn a lot about yourself and provide you with a vocation you can use and the discipline you need.”
