Mehlville Athletes Remember Drunk Driving Victims Through Community Service

Members of the football and soccer teams picked up trash Saturday morning.

Athletes from the Mehlville High School football and soccer teams spent their Saturday morning picking up trash at Baumgartner and Lemay Ferry roads to remember two boys who were lost in a drunk driving accident.

The family and friends of Jonathan Hearst and Kevin Houska adopted the stretch of road after the two 19-year-olds were killed in July 2002. Their car hit a guardrail on Lemay Ferry Road traveling at approximately 100 miles per hour. Only the driver of the car survived and was found drunk.

The football and soccer programs joined together Saturday to remember the boys and their contributions to the school. They were both athletes and excelled in academics.

This is the second year for the trash pick-up, and more than 50 athletes came out to remember the victims.

The teams are also raising money to donate to the Jonathan Hearst and Kevin Houska Memorial Scholarship Fund. The organization is hosting a golf tournament on Oct. 8, where they will present donations to the Hearst and Houska families.
