Oakville High School Celebrates Commencement

The class of 2011 looks forward to the next chapter of their lives.

The Family Arena in St. Charles lived up to its name Sunday as outgoing Oakville High School Principal William Scheffler welcomed family, friends and graduates to the 2011 commencement ceremony.

The familiar graduation tone of excitement and sadness filled the air as the Oakville High Symphonic Band played during the processional, led by Band Director Vance Brakefield.

Scheffler thanked teachers that were recognized by the graduating class, and he marked accomplishments of the school year.

“It has truly been my pleasure to serve as your principal for Oakville High School for the past 6 years,” Scheffler said. “The honors, awards and scholarships that this group has earned certainly has been impressive. Over $7 million in scholarships have been awarded that we are aware of.”

Scheffler reminded the graduates to remember family members who had an influence and thank them for the difference that was made.

“This is the last night that you will be together as a class and I know that you are very excited about the next chapter in your lives. Thank you for the opportunity to work with you and best of luck,” Scheffler said.

After a video presentation highlighting the class, Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude students were recognized.

Board of Education President, Venki Palamand, addressed the students directly, saying that furthering their education and continuing to learn and understand the world around them will be the key to their success. He went on to give comparisons of what the world was like in 1993 when they were born and how much it has changed in the short 18 years.

“It is an exciting time to be young. Just 18 years ago is a lifetime for all of you, but I suspect it is a blink of an eye to your parents,” Palamand said. “Remember you have choices and do what makes you happy. In the process make sure you make the world a better place.”

Palamand then instructed the group to “stop for a moment, look around, take a look at the classmate to your left, the classmate to your right, try to find that childhood friend in the row in front or behind you. Look in the stands and try to find your parents.”

“Feel this moment. Remember this moment. As a former Oakville student myself it has been my honor and privilege to speak to you,” he said.

After speeches by Valedictorian Xi Wang, Salutatorian Michael Weaver and Class President Laura Schubert, Scheffler certified that the graduating class of 2011 have met all their requirements and were eligible to graduate.

After the presentation of the diplomas, Scheffler spoke above the roaring, clapping crowd and introduced the graduating class of 2011.
