Oakville Rebounds With Victory Over Fox

The Tigers defeat the Warriors 38-16 in their district opener Friday night at Fox.

Oakville senior Javon Henderson admitted that he was embarrassed about his team's 50-0 loss to Lafayette last Friday night.

Henderson and his Tiger teammates responded well to the embarrassment as they pounded Fox 38-16 Friday night in the district opener for both teams.

"Last week was a big wake-up call for us," Henderson said. "It was a bad game but this was a whole new week. It was time to move forward."

And Henderson was moving in all areas of the game as he scored on offense, defense and special teams to key the Tiger victory over the winless Warriors.

"Javon did not have a good game last week and he was a man possessed tonight," Oakville coach Arlee Conners said. "He was on a mission and he had quite a bounce back game."

Henderson set the tone with a score on defense as he raced 72 yards with a fumble recovery after Derrick Brown had intercepted a pass.

Javon's brother, Jaron, got into the mix after a Fox field goal as he scored on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Andy Oliver in the first quarter.

Javon closed out the first half scoring as he ran 48 yards for a scoring in the opening minute of the second quarter as the Tigers led 21-3 at haltime.

Fox came out and scored on the first possession of the second half but the Tigers answered on their first drive of the half as Javon Henderson caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Oliver on a fourth-and-11 situation.

The Tiger defense stopped Fox on the Oakville 12-yard line and Henderson added an exclamation point to his huge day as he scored on an 80-yard run from punt formation for his fourth touchdown of the night.

"It was supposed to be a punt," Henderson admitted. "But I saw something outside and I just ran."

Andrew Bick kicked a 27-yard field goal for the final scoring of the game for the Tigers. Fox added a touchdown on the last play of the game.

"That wasn't us last week," said Conners, who missed the game against the Lancers. "Tonight was the start of a whole new season. When it comes down to districts everybody is 0-0."

The Tigers are now 1-0 in the "new" season and can clinch a spot in the first round of the playoffs next week with a home win over another winless team, Northwest.

"One year they said that we were in a weak district and then both of our teams went out and won the next round," Conners said. "You just have to go out and play who is on the schedule."

The Oakville statistics for the game were eye-popping.

Javon Henerson had five rushes for 148 yards and one reception for 34 yards in addition to his 72-yard touchdown on defense.

Jaron had three receptions for 152 yards.

Oliver made the most of his completions as he was 4-for-9 in the air of 186 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
