Oakville Weight Loss Challenge: Week 3 Results
Franchesca and Christine have a bye-week in the competition this week.
Sometimes (OK, a lot of times) we all deserve a break. We have busy, stressful lives. We face pressures daily. This week I say, "Who cares if cookies were consumed?" I call a bye-week for Franchesca and Christine.
Next week we will catch up with both ladies. I will report where they are regarding weight, exercise and state of mind. This week I encourage breathing and considering how to better enjoy the weight loss process.
The word "diet" demotivates me. Anyone feel this way? When I say the word the first thing that comes to mind is "self-inflicted punishment."

When dieting I feel the need to isolate myself from social situations, events and parties that normally I would enjoy. I find it difficult to participate in dining at friends and families homes as I do not wish to burden them with my "dietary needs." Therefore, "diet" means a much less fun Jen.
I now stand up against my own idea of what "diet" is. I don't consider myself on or off a diet. I simply eat how I eat. I don't feel limited or defined by it.

My personal choice of eating is in line with how our challengers have decided to lose weight. I eat meals consisting of low carbohydrate vegetables, lean protein and essential fats.
My message to Franchesca and Christine this week is that low carbohydrate does not have to mean difficult meal planning, deprivation and evenings spent at home.
The weight loss process does not have to be a downer. You can still go out to eat. You can still cook one meal for the entire family. You can still enjoy social activities including having people over for dinner or parties.
I find eating out very simple. Almost every restaurant has a steak or chicken option that can be ordered with double veggies instead of a potato or rice. Salads are always a good choice and some local restaurants like and have wonderful salad options. Top salads with blue cheese or ranch dressing and you can be sure not to overdose on your carbohydrate intake.
Craving pizza with the kids? Get it delivered and eat your portion sans crust. When I am craving a night in of movies and pizza I order a whole medium pizza for myself and I eat only the toppings. My friends fight over who gets to eat my leftover crust. I am not suggesting this for every night, but I don't feel deprived or left out of the event — the toppings are the best part anyway!
Family dinners can be simple and streamlined. I stock my freezer and fridge with lots of meat and veggie options. My pantry is stocked with spices to add variety to my meals. I also keep a supply of easy boxed potatoes or pasta to keep my carbohydrate eaters happy. My family and I eat the same main entree and salad or vegetable but I prepare a starchy side just for them.
Bottom line? Have fun, relax and enjoy yourself.
