Panthers Serve Up Win in Home Opener

Mehlville defeats Union in two 25-15 games.

After her team’s first home game of the season, Susan Hurt said she was pleasantly surprised.

The team flattened Union in two games on Tuesday night, 25-15, 25-15, after getting off to a rough 1-2 start last week at the Marissa Tournament.

"It was a different team than we saw last week," she said. "We still need to work on defense. We're a fairly young team. We haven't played well together, and it's just getting everyone to gel."

The team struggled with cohesiveness at last week’s tourney, but none of that was apparent against Union.

Freshman Morgan Walters played a vital role in the Panthers' improved play. Hurt pulled the middle hitter up to varsity after losing a few players earlier in the season.

"She did much better today," Hurt said. "I feel like she's eased into the position."

Junior Amy Nguyen closed the second game with a few decisive kills from the right side.

"Amy is like that," Hurt said. "She's so focused and into it. She gets up there and plays with her whole heart. She was on tonight."
