http://mid-eastaaa.org/ You don't have to be a born and bred St. Louisan to know living here gives you the opportunity to experience all four seasons in one! We know that it can snow on Mother's Day but by Father's Day you could cook an egg on the sidewalk. Regardless of the season, during severe weather it is important for us to check on our elderly neighbors, friends and family members. When the heat index reaches above 80 degrees please take a moment to call or drop by to make sure that person is using their air conditioner (and that it is in good working condition!) Pay attention to how warm their home is; they may not be using their air conditioner because they are afraid of the utility costs. Fans just push hot air around and do not cool down the temperature. Encourage them to use the air conditioner; a high utility bill isn't worth risking their health or life over. If need be, help them make payment arrangements with the utility company or call 211 for a list of cooling sites in the area or utility assistance programs. Perhaps they could stay with you until the "heat wave" ends or you could install a window unit at least in their bedroom. During sweltering temperatures it is suggested the elderly (and persons with health conditions) stay in doors, in air conditioning, wear light weight/loose fitting clothing, drink plenty of water and limit physical activity. Please, check on the elderly often and at different times during the day. Make sure they know your phone number or have someone they can call if they need help or in the event of a weather related emergency.
