Seventh Grade Students Earn $5,000 for Animal Protection

Students from Washington Middle School wrote letters asking for donations to the APA.

Two seventh graders earned 5,000 for the Animal Protective Association of Missouri (APA) with letter-writing skills they learned at Washington Middle School.

Ray Cordes and Sarah Schryver were learning business letter-writing in Katie McMullen’s Communication Arts class and asked for a donation to the APA from Carol House Furniture.

“All of their commercials promote animals at the end, so I thought they would donate. I was surprised at the amount, though,” Sarah said in a district release, and Ray agreed. “I was shocked,” he said about the size of the donation. “I couldn’t believe it.”

The furniture store is a sponsor of the annual APA Canine Carnival in the fall and asked that the money be used to support the event this year. Washington Middle will also be included as a sponsor through the donation.

Other seventh-graders gathered $800 for the APA from family members and other local businesses with their letters.

“All of the seventh-grade students across the district participate in a business letter-writing unit, but each school does it a little differently,” McMullen said.
