Your New Neighborhood Deli

For moms looking for an alternative to fast food, try this locally-owned deli.

I make frequent visits to the Hill. I pretend it’s to visit my sister-in-law and her three adorable kids, but I also find myself craving the food on a regular basis. There’s been many a time where we’ve walked to a nearby deli or pizza place and we can always find a new place to try. They even have a great little hot dog stand nearby.

So far, Eovaldi’s Deli is my favorite and I just can’t get enough of their sandwiches. Though my sister-in-law would never admit it, I’m pretty sure she doesn’t want me drooling on her doorstep every day. But I envy all those great little restaurants where the owners know her by name and pass our kids little treats.

Next week, I’m inviting her to hang out at my place in Mehlville and try my new neighborhood eatery, . My kids and I pass by it almost daily since they opened in January, and when we finally tried it last week, I dove into a chicken salad sandwich that had a delightfully spicy kick. My kids enjoyed the turkey sub and lit up when the owner came by with cookies for them.

Two days later, I swung by my sister’s house to pick her up and introduce her to JP’s. Linda lives just two blocks from me and I knew she would appreciate my discovery. We both tried the JP’s Super, which was loaded with three kinds of meat, two cheeses and all the extras.

Again, my kids had the turkey. While my budget can’t take this kind of frequent dining, I know we will enjoy being regular customers at JP’s Deli.

There are other great local restaurants in Mehlville. A few weeks ago, we tried Berix for the first time. We all loved the food we ordered, and my husband and I agreed that Berix will be the pick for our next date night.

As a mom, I am a little concerned about the impact of the food choices I make for my family. Despite the unparalleled convenience of a drive-thru, I can’t help recognizing that fast food on a regular basis is just not a good choice for my kids. And I can’t help feeling a tiny bit of rage, albeit a rage that is easily muted depending on how long a day I’ve had, that someone is getting rich from selling me junk that’s bad for my kids.

Those fries are so amazingly yummy, though. Darn Food, Inc.

While I didn’t see any big signs boasting organic or local ingredients at JP’s Deli, I do know that the owners are local. They live right here in South County.
And I love that I can get a quick meal for my family, with healthy fresh choices. The prices were great, too, hitting somewhere between Subway and St. Louis Bread Company.

When you need a quick meal for your family, support a new local business and try JP’s Deli, owned by Leslie and Jerry Pollard. They deliver orders over $20 and have BBQ choices Thursday through Saturday. JP’s is located at the corner of Green Park and Union Road.
