As discussed by County Executive Dr. Sam Page, the move follows the CDCβs decision on Tuesday evening to authorize the Pfizer vaccine for children in that age group. Vaccinations are dependent on the supply of the youth vaccine, which is controlled by the state of Missouri. DPH has received its first shipment of 300 doses of the youth vaccine and is working with the state to expand that supply.

Youth Transmission Update
Β
After an initial spike during the first month of the school year, COVID-19 cases among students in school have steadily declined and are now at their lowest since the school year began. This is due to the tireless efforts of the leaders and staff of the schools in Saint Louis County to implement COVID-19 prevention protocols. DPH is grateful for all that they are doing to keep kids in school safely. During the week ending on October 23, DPH identified 181 student cases of COVID and 31 staff cases of COVID in County public and private schools in the ninth week of classes, leading to quarantine for 1,090 individuals.

Community transmission remains high among children in St. Louis County. The number of new cases per day is almost three times higher than it was in June of this year. Children have some of the highest rates of disease and percent positivity among St Louis County residents. To keep children safe, it is important to continue to do what has worked thus far β universal masking and increased testing in order to reduce community transmission. The other tool to keep children safe is the COVID-19 vaccination. Now that the CDC has recommended the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine for children ages 5 to 11, DPH encourages parents to get their children vaccinated as soon as possible.Β
