1. 2026 Business Leaders of the Year: Mark Hecquet (sbj.net) — Tourism chief Mark Hecquet is being honored as a 2026 Business Leader of the Year for steering Springfield's Convention & Visitors Bureau into the more community-focused Visit Springfield. He highlights how tourism supports local jobs, small businesses, arts, sports, and events, and stresses collaborative leadership to make Springfield more vibrant and welcoming for residents and visitors alike.
2. Church mission team serves in rural Guatemala • Pathway (mbcpathway.com) — Members of South Haven Baptist Church in Springfield recently spent a week serving in a rural Guatemalan community, distributing food kits, water filters, and installing a safer stove for a local family. The team of students and adults also led daily Vacation Bible School sessions for dozens of children, sharing Bible stories, crafts, and meals while partnering with local churches for follow-up.
3. Rapper Lefty Gunplay Arrested in Missouri After Springfield Show (tmz.com) — A touring rapper known as Lefty Gunplay was arrested by Springfield Police on a fourth-degree assault charge just hours after performing a Friday night show in town. Details of the alleged incident remain unclear, but jail records show he was booked Saturday morning and is expected to be released Sunday, with police yet to comment publicly.
4. 'I absolutely don't regret doing it': Anti-ICE protest leads to six arrests in Springfield (sgfcitizen.org) — Six activists, including an 81-year-old retired minister, were arrested after an anti-ICE sit-in at the Greene County Sheriff's Office, intensifying debate over ICE detainees held in Springfield. Local groups say overcrowding and a growing federal detainee population at the Greene County Jail are fueling calls to end the ICE contract and increase public oversight of conditions there.
