Learn to forage responsibly with MDC presentation Oct. 6 in Springfield (mo.gov) β Springfield residents curious about wild foods can sign up now for a Missouri Department of Conservation foraging class on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. Instructor Rachael West of Eating the Ozarks will cover safe plant identification, ethical harvesting and easy ways to add local wild ingredients to everyday meals, with registration required for ages 12 and up.

Teens charged in downtown Springfield shooting, local groups work to curb violence (ozarksfirst.com) β A downtown Springfield shooting that injured three teens has led to serious juvenile assault charges against a 15-year-old and similar charges for a 16-year-old still being sought by law enforcement. Local leaders highlight ongoing work by the Springfield-Greene County Gun Safety and Gun Violence Reduction Collaborative, which distributes gun locks and youth programs while studying root causes of rising youth gun violence.

3. Man charged after attempted robbery leads to Springfield pursuit (ozarksfirst.com) β A Bolivar man is jailed on a $100,000 bond after police say an attempted robbery at a Springfield home improvement store led to a dangerous nighttime pursuit on Sunshine Avenue and U.S. 65. Court records describe high speeds, red-light running, a tactical vehicle stop, and the later discovery of a suspected drug baggie and admitted fentanyl use.

4. James River Church hands out 2,000 pizzas to Springfield families (ky3.com) β Springfield elementary students at Weller, Westport, Fremont, McGregor and Williams got to take home free pizzas this week, thanks to volunteers from James River Church. More than 2,000 pies were handed out at dismissal, with additional meals sent to Head Start locations in Joplin, turning an ordinary school day into an unexpected family pizza night.

Missouri Press Association recognizes Springfield News-Leader (news-leader.com) β Springfield's own News-Leader just picked up major statewide honors, including a young journalist award for reporter Marta Mieze and a first-place rural EMS series by Susan Szuch. Their work spotlighting local government accountability in Springfield, Greene County and nearby communities underscores how strong local reporting helps residents keep an eye on those in power.
