Wizards & Fantastic Beasts Day set for Springfield zoo (news-leader.com) — Families in Springfield can dive into Wizards & Fantastic Beasts Day today at Dickerson Park Zoo, with themed activities and costumes encouraged from 9 a.m. to noon. Regular admission covers wizard-themed games, crafts, and animal fact stations, while the Bush Country Café sells special treats as you explore tigers, wolves, and more.
2. A tree stump at Phelps Grove Park is being transformed into a work of art (ksmu.org) — A tree stump in Springfield's Phelps Grove Park is being carved into a detailed wildlife sculpture featuring hawks, owls, foxes, squirrels, and sunflowers, all inspired by species found in the park. Local artist and Parkview graduate Louis Medlock, known for his ice and wood carving, is working on-site daily and hopes to finish the piece by the end of the month.
3. Deaf community gathers for fall picnic in Springfield, Mo. (ky3.com) — Deaf and hard-of-hearing students and families from Springfield gathered at Phelps Grove Park for a fall picnic centered on sign language, games, and community-building. Parkview High School ASL students say the event helps isolated deaf students feel understood and connected, and organizers are already planning another family picnic in the spring for those who couldn't attend.
4. Springfield Police issue citations in youth alcohol enforcement operation downtown (springfieldstandard.com) — Springfield Police recently carried out an undercover operation in downtown venues to crack down on underage drinking, issuing eight citations to minors and one to an adult who supplied alcohol. All cited youths were referred to a state diversion education program, and the department emphasized legal consequences as well as safety concerns around youth alcohol use.
5. Infectious disease expert says plague not major concern in Ozarks (ky3.com) — A Mercy Hospital infectious disease expert in Springfield says a recent reported plague case in Russia is not a major concern for the Ozarks, thanks to modern antibiotics and antivirals. Speaking from Springfield, he emphasizes that today's treatments make outcomes far different from historical plagues, while U.S. and global health agencies continue monitoring the situation abroad.
