The pandemic has created an environment for many fire departments that required change, and it was no different for the Springfield Fire Department. One of the most unanticipated changes in response to the pandemic has been the need to modify the process used for selecting and hiring new firefighters.

“Despite the challenges of the pandemic, we chose to see this time as an opportunity for reflection and evaluation of our practices, and opportunity for positive change in department processes not only to adapt to the needs of the moment, but to emerge from the pandemic in a more efficient and effective manner,” said Fire Chief David Pennington.
