Oral, Vision and Brain Health Are Connected

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, and Sept. 21 marks World Alzheimer’s Day, making this an important time to talk about the connection between oral, vision and brain health. Research continues to show that what happens in the mouth and eyes can impact overall health, including the brain.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and that number is expected to nearly double by 2050. While there is still much to learn about the disease, studies show that gum disease creates chronic inflammation and can allow harmful bacteria to enter the bloodstream, potentially accelerating the progression of Alzheimer’s. People with gum disease are 1.5 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those with healthy gums. Researchers have also identified a connection between deteriorating eye health and an increased risk of cognitive decline.

The good news is that protecting your oral and vision health may also help protect your brain. Regular dental and eye exams can help identify problems early, while brushing and flossing daily, a healthy diet and avoiding tobacco support long-term health.

Taking care of our teeth and eyes is about more than a healthy smile or clear vision. It is an investment in our overall well-being as we age.
