U.S. Cellular Announces Art Contest Winners

Wireless Company Hosted Black History Month Art Contest in Conjunction with Local Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield

U.S. Cellular announced the three winners of its 2018 Black History Month Art Competition with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield at a celebration on Friday. Nyla Graves, a 4th grader from the Musgrave Unit, was awarded first place for her portrayal of human rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; Inara Briggs, a 6th grader from the Sertoma Unit, was awarded second place for her portrayal of civil rights activist Rosa Parks; and Calyna Kelley, a 5th grader from the Stalnaker Unit, was awarded third place for her portrayal Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These young artists received a certificate and $250, $150 and $100 gift card prizes, respectively.

“The Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield artwork created for this contest was impressive, and we were thrilled to celebrate with the winners,” said Nakeita Stewart, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Missouri. “It’s the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the talent of our youth by commemorating African-American icons that have influenced the course of history while celebrating the diversity of our country.”

The contest invited members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield to create an original 8.5 x 11 piece of artwork in commemoration of influential African-Americans, including business people, sports figures, historical figures and celebrities. The 10 finalists’ art was displayed in the U.S. Cellular store on 3825 S Glenstone Ave during the month of February, where the Springfield community voted for their favorites. Votes were tallied to determine the winner.

"The U.S. Cellular Black History Month Art Project was such a wonderful opportunity for our members,” said Brandy Harris, director of programs and Sertoma Unit director. “They learned so many new things and were able to express their creativity. Our relationship with U.S. Cellular has always been special, but to see our kids recognized for their work is particularly wonderful."

U.S. Cellular’s Black History Month Art Contest is just another example of the company’s commitment to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield. Since 2015, the wireless company has donated $30,000 to this local club, as well as 20, new LG G Pad tablets. Plus, associates continue to engage in ongoing volunteer opportunities that enable them to mentor and provide kids with hands-on learning experiences.
