WGU Missouri Awards More Than $750,000 in Scholarships in 2021
Nonprofit, fully online university awarded 296 scholarships to Missourians pursuing their undergraduate and graduate degrees
WGU Missouri, which is committed to providing busy adults across the state with access to affordable, flexible and high-quality college education, today announced it had invested more than $750,000 in scholarships to new and returning students during the 2021 calendar year. The total is a new record for WGU, which aims to continue to increase amounts of scholarships awarded each year to help make the dream of higher education a reality for hundreds of Missourians.
Although WGU Missouri is known for its affordable tuition and competency-based model that allows students to graduate faster, university-funded scholarships have been key in helping lower tuition even more. In just this past year, the university awarded 296 scholarships, totaling $752,428, to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in business, K-12 teacher education, information technology, and health professions, including nursing. Since WGU Missouri’s inception, the university has awarded 1,401 scholarships to students, totaling more than $3.4 million.
“We are honored to be able to offer a variety of scholarships to our students – ranging in value from $2,000 to $10,000 – to help them reach their educational and career goals,” said WGU Missouri Chancellor Dr. Angie Besendorfer. “We want to ensure that everyone has access to affordable and high-quality college education, and the scholarships we offer are just one of the many ways we can help adults who are interesting in furthering their education.”

WGU Missouri awards scholarships based on three factors: meeting the basic eligibility requirements, answers on the application, and an interview with a scholarship counselor. Scholarships are awarded to students following an online application process. Recipients are chosen based on their academic record, financial need, online study readiness, current competency, and other considerations specific to each scholarship. The scholarship committee recurrently awards scholarships throughout the year, as new students are admitted to their programs each month.
