Garden of the Month for May

Boone Country Garden Club awards Rob and Donna Scherbring garden of the month for May.

When you pull up to the home of Rob and Donna Scherbring, the garden looks tidy and well planned. Rob attributes success to Mother Nature, but after talking with him for a while, it’s clear that success is a result of the time they’ve spent working on their garden. Rob admits later, “There isn’t a hole here that I haven’t dug”.

The Scherbring’s garden is full of contrasting foliage colors and textures, and a wide variety of trees and shrubs, with the goal being, “to have something in bloom all of the itme”. They’ve recently started a woodland garden near the back of their property, complete with an arbor and stone bench, and newly purchased hostas sit patiently in pots awaiting planting.

The front garden has a unique dwarf peach tree with dark red foliage, and Rob says the fruit is edible. They have other edibles too, a great looking apple tree, and mint, for refreshing Mai Tai’s in summer. Planters dotted around the garden add pops of color. Beautiful cobalt blue planters in varying sizes sit pool side.

Rob pointed to a towering willow tree that he planted when it was only a few feet tall. You’d never be able to tell that he had relocated it a few years ago, to see if it would do better.

A sharp looking island of shrubs sits near the driveway, with two snowball viburnums taking center stage. The walkway to the backyard is lined with hot pink azaleas in peak bloom.
