Occupational Therapy to Improve Quality of Life

A new medical trend is emerging among the country’s aging population – baby boomers are interested in regular “tune ups” to stay active and healthy, and occupational/hand therapists are the experts many baby boomers and their physicians are turning to.

Nicole Kauppila, an Athletico occupational therapist (OT) with more than 17-years experience, works with these patients on a daily basis and has seen the OT occupation, which turns 100 this year, boom during her career. In fact, there are more than 14,000 job openings annually, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for OTs is growing much faster than the average for all occupations.

One of the common ailments Nicole sees is arthritis. For clients coming in with arthritis pain, she typically recommends these “tune up” exercises to help improve quality of life:

  • Switch sleep habits: Sleeping in the fetal position can increase the risk of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and lead to nerve compression injuries in the elbow, shoulder and spine. In contrast, sleeping on your back keeps your back straight and supports your spine.
  • Help with hand pain: Arthritis is one of the most common sources of discomfort among the aging population. With your elbow straight, palm facing up, use your other hand to pull that hand down toward the floor. Next, with your elbow straight and palm facing down toward the floor, use your other hand to pull your hand down and out. Hold stretches for 10 seconds and repeat 10 times.
