SLPS narrows in on recommendation for school realignment plan (kmov.com) — St. Louis Public Schools is moving toward a major realignment that could close or consolidate up to 20 buildings, with an initial recommendation due Aug. 25 and final board action expected in October. District leaders say they're slowing the process after community pushback, while promising to maintain gifted and magnet programs and gather more input at three public meetings through mid‑September.
   

2. Meet Xaro, the St. Louis airport dog competing in TSA Cutest Canine Contest (ksdk.com) — A TSA explosives-detection dog based at St. Louis Lambert International Airport is a finalist in a national "cutest canine" contest, and local travelers can help decide the winner. Xaro, a 9-year-old German shepherd nearing retirement, is competing against a Dallas airport dog, with public voting happening on TSA's social media platforms today and tomorrow.
   

3. Mississippi native and Washington University Ph.D. student killed in North St. Louis crash remembered; Memorial Scholarship established (kmov.com) — A 26-year-old Washington University Ph.D. candidate was killed in an Aug. 4 crash at North Euclid and Martin Luther King Drive in North St. Louis, and police say the investigation is still ongoing. Family, mentors, and the university are honoring her by creating a memorial scholarship that will bring undergraduates from her Mississippi alma mater to St. Louis for summer research, extending her passion for science and mentorship.
   

4. Vigil outside St. Louis ICE office, demand jail oversight (kmov.com) — Dozens of faith and community members gathered outside the downtown St. Louis federal building that houses ICE to pray, share stories, and demand independent oversight of Missouri jails holding immigration detainees. Organizers also urged local leaders to end voluntary cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and raised concerns about surveillance tools like Flock cameras used in St. Louis neighborhoods.
