📰 News we're reading

1. City Hall Joins Gateway Arch in 'Going Dark' for Bird Migration (stlouis-mo.gov) — If you notice City Hall darker at night this month, it's part of St. Louis' effort to protect millions of birds migrating along the Mississippi Flyway by switching off decorative lighting through September 30. The city, already recognized as both an Urban Bird Treaty and Bird City, is pairing this move with prairie restorations and monarch-friendly plantings to boost urban wildlife.

2. St. Louis fire department launches recruitment push amid staffing shortage (firstalert4.com) — If you've ever considered joining the St. Louis Fire Department, now's the moment: the city is short about 80 firefighters and urgently recruiting 18- to 33-year-olds. Leaders say response times remain strong but long shifts are straining crews, and they're offering starting pay just under $61,000 while competing with higher-paid departments in Mehlville and St. Charles.

3. Rockwood seniors explore internships with St. Louis area nonprofits (westnewsmagazine.com) — Rockwood's Marquette High School seniors spent their summer interning at major St. Louis nonprofits, from Empower Missouri and the International Institute to ArchCity Defenders, gaining hands-on experience in public service and legal advocacy. Their work ranged from food security and refugee support to expungement help and observing the Board of Aldermen, giving them real-world skills while directly serving St. Louis communities.

4. Toronto FC aims to boost playoff hopes against hot St. Louis City (statenews.net) — St. Louis soccer fans can watch City SC host Toronto FC at Energizer Park tonight as the club rides a 17-match unbeaten streak and surging goal-scoring form. With Rafael Navarro on a hot run and a U.S. Open Cup final ahead, this match could further solidify St. Louis' Western Conference playoff position.
