📰 News we're reading

1. New and Improved: Sustainable Neighborhood Toolkit Version 2.0 (stlouis-mo.gov) — St. Louis residents now have an updated Sustainable Neighborhood Toolkit that turns the city's 2025 Sustainability and Climate Plan into concrete neighborhood projects you can start on your block. From tree planting and rain gardens to tool libraries, bike hubs, and cool roofs, Version 2.0 lays out costs, benefits, and local examples to help neighbors organize and act together.

2. Neighbors band together to clean south St. Louis alleyway (fox2now.com) — Neighbors in south St. Louis' Dutchtown neighborhood just turned a long-neglected alley off Gasconade Street into a cleaner, safer space by tackling illegal dumping themselves. After Teague Summers organized friends to clear trash, more residents joined in and the city hauled away bulk debris. Their effort is meant to inspire other St. Louis blocks to act instead of waiting for someone else.

3. Carmen Meeks carries educators' lessons forward (stlamerican.com) — An education leader with deep roots in St. Louis is being honored this month for years of work helping local students feel seen, supported, and ready for school. From teaching in Hazelwood and Jennings to leading Washington University's school partnership and the Special School District board, she's helped boost kindergarten readiness and expand early childhood success across the region.

4. Webster Groves residents also hear train horns blaring after decades of quiet (firstalert4.com) — Residents in parts of St. Louis City and nearby Webster Groves are suddenly hearing loud train horns again after nearly two decades of quiet, because a Webster Groves crossing was once included in the city's limits. Federal regulators say St. Louis City fell years behind on required railroad paperwork and safety markings, but new signs and fresh striping are underway to restore quiet zones soon.

5. North St. Louis church hit by air conditioner theft for a third time, raising other concerns (firstalert4.com) — A north St. Louis congregation at Siloam Missionary Baptist Church is facing thousands of dollars in repairs after thieves stole rooftop air conditioners for the third time, even cutting security lights and wiring. Pastor Charles Jones worries repeated insurance claims could jeopardize coverage and strain funds used for Thanksgiving meals, school supplies, and neighborhood outreach. Police are stepping up responses as AC thefts hit many local churches.
