Experience a powerful performance by the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus under the direction of Philip Barnes as part of our Voices of Change series.
The season climaxes with a series of works advocating for equality between genders and races, and it champions new additions to the choral repertoire. No fewer than six of the works on the program have been written in the past ten years, culminating in a world premiere from Maria Granillo, our new ‘Composer-in-Residence,’ who teaches at the National University of Mexico. We have chosen a venue fitting this celebration of female artists, as The Link Auditorium started out life as The Wednesday Club of St. Louis, which had been created for a study group of women eager to educate themselves beyond the chauvinist walls of many schools in St. Louis. Artists like Sara Teasdale visited here, so it’s fitting that the chorus sings Howard Helvey’s madrigals that set her verses.
 This concert celebrates equal representation through song, featuring tickets at $40 for general admission and $10 for students. Join this renowned ensemble for an afternoon of exceptional musicianship at the historic Link Auditorium on Sunday, May 31 at 3pm

VINCEN GARCÍA is a Spanish bassist from Valencia, acclaimed as one of the most prestigious figures in the modern jazz and funk scene worldwide. He has over 14 years of professional experience, having developed a distinctive, modern sound marked by energetic and gritty execution.
Born into a musical family—his mother a vocalist and his father a trumpeter—Vincen was introduced to performance and touring at an early age. He began playing bass in his high school band and developed his craft entirely as a self-taught musician
Vincen is among the most listened-to bassists globally in terms of streaming, amassing hundreds of thousands of followers and millions of views and reactions. Additionally, he has been one of the most impactful artists in the genre, performing at festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), the North Sea Jazz Festival (Netherlands), or the Pori Jazz Festival (Finland). His first album, titled *Ventura*, is received an overwhelmingly positive reception in cities around the world. Vincen García also collaborates on tours with international artists like Cory Wong and Jesús Molina. The artist will present his second album in 2026 with a world tour that will span every continent.

Did you see Mathis Picard accompanying Cyrille Aimée here in March? Wow! One of the complete breakthrough debut piano performances ever at Blue Strawberry. His future looks to be unlimited, and we are proud to get him back on June 3 for his own solo show. He brings an infectious energy, spirit and humor to his astonishing technical skills.
Born and raised in France, with formative years in Madagascar, and now based in New York City, Mathis honors his background by merging all those musical influences. Named “A Rising Star” by The Scotsman, Mathis is an ASCAP Next Generation of Songwriters Recipient, a member of the Montreux Jazz Foundation, and an alumnus of The Juilliard School, where he was mentored by Kenny Barron. WhatsOnStage has described Mathis as a “knockout, as dynamic a personality as he is virtuosic on the keys.”

Tom McDermott is one of New Orleans’ premiere piano players and composers - a modern day keeper of the city’s piano lineage.
Born in 1957 and raised right here in St. Louis, where he earned a Masters’ Degree in Music, wrote music journalism for the Globe Democrat, and soaked up the sounds of ragtime and traditional jazz that flourished here in the 1960s and 70s. In 1984, spurred by his love of James Booker, Professor Longhair and Dr. John, he moved to New Orleans, a trip enabled by a gig at the World’s Fair.
Tom’s tastes are eclectic - he’s just about the only New Orleans pianist to stretch from the mid-19th-century music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk to the funky New Orleans piano today. He has a great love of Brazilian music (17 trips there so far), the Beatles, European classical music, and early Duke Ellington. He has performed with New Orleans heroes Pete Fountain, Irma Thomas and Gatemouth Brown. He co-founded and arranged for the Grammy award-winning brass band, the New Orleans Nightcrawlers. His performances with The Dukes of Dixieland placed him in Carnegie Hall, Germany, Denmark, Peru, Japan, and much of America. His music has been praised by The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times. He has recorded 17 albums as a leader; these recordings include 85 original tunes. His music has been heard frequently on NPR, i.e. “All Things Considered”, “American Routes”, and “The Moth.” A group he co-led with clarinetist Evan Christopher, the Danza Quartet, appeared on NPR’s New Year’s Eve show “Toast of the Nation” on 2008-2009. Tom has written for the theatre (the Obie-award-winning off-Broadway show, “Nita and Zita”), and appeared in bit roles in the movies (“He Said She Said”). In the New Orleans-based HBO series “Treme,” he played himself five times in three seasons and had 10 pieces of music used on the soundtrack. Jake Shimabukuro is a world-renowned ukulele virtuoso whose groundbreaking artistry has redefined the instrument for the 21st century. Alvin Garrett is a Grammy-nominated songwriter, an independent recording artist, a bass guitarist, a successful entrepreneur, and a catalytic thought leader. In all of Garrett’s endeavors, there is an intersection of art, advocacy, and cultural awareness. With a masterful blend of soul, substance, and strategy, Garrett uses his talent and platform not only to entertain but to empower. Garrett’s trajectory as a songwriter began to point upwards in 2010 when he partnered with Awardwinning producer and songwriter, Fred Jerkins, III of Darkchild Gospel. Lupita Infante Mariachi The critically adored Mexican-American singer-songwriter Lupita Infante is part of a new generation of musica mexicana artists, so deeply rooted in tradition that they possess the confidence and expertise to brilliantly reinvent it in the modern day. Her name is instantly recognizable to tens of millions of Mexicans as she is the granddaughter of Pedro Infante Cruz (1917–1957), one of the most beloved Mexican singers and actors of the 20th century.
Carrying her family’s legendary legacy forward, Lupita has earned numerous awards and accolades, including 2 GRAMMY® and 2 Latin GRAMMY® nominations, most recently being nominated for “Best Regional Song” at the 26th Annual Latin GRAMMY® Awards, standing out as the only female artist in the category. In addition, she has received the Mayor’s Excellence Award from her hometown of Downey, California, and was honored with the Latino Spirit Award from the California Latino Legislative Caucus.
In May of 2025, Lupita released her third official studio album, “La Corona es Mia.” Across 10 powerful tracks, Lupita cements her place as a leading force in Música Mexicana, claiming the crown that's rightfully hers. Additionally, in 2025, Lupita will be touring across the US and Mexico, opening for Música Mexicana legends such as Pepe Aguilar, Los Angeles Azules, and Mariachi Vargas, among others. Lupita’s presence on this tour is a powerful testament to her growing impact in the genre. Sharing the stage with icons like Pepe Aguilar, who is also part of a family dynasty, showcases a true generational blend of Musica Mexicana legacies. These shows bring recognition for an artist who is gracefully bridging the past and future of the genre.
Lupita studied Ethnomusicology at UCLA and joined the school's renowned Mariachi de Uclatlán, which is the oldest university mariachi in the United States with an over 50-year trajectory. Studying ethnomusicology gave Lupita the chance to rediscover Pedro Infante’s legacy through the works of academics: “I would write about Mexican music and research women in mariachi music, and study machismo in Mexican music and how that translated through my grandfather. I think that was a lot more interesting than if I had majored in vocal performance.” To pay her tuition, she worked as a Lyft driver. She graduated from UCLA in 2017. “I was driving for Lyft to be able to pay my bills. I knew I wasn’t the kind of person who was going to be stuck in an office, even though it meant sacrificing that security.”
Despite Lupita coming from an iconic lineage, she has overcome boundaries to achieve commercial and critical success within her career. As a 2x GRAMMY@ nominee, Lupita Infante is solidifying her place as a leading female face in Musica Mexicana, while simultaneously becoming one of the most critically adored Musica Mexicana artists of the new generation.

A Philadelphia musician who proudly carries a torch for the city’s soul legacy, Mutlu makes a connection with every audience.
Coming up in the Philly scene, he played around town and in area clubs before landing his first tour opening for Joe Jackson. Since then he’s toured across the U.S. and Europe with his musical brother, Amos Lee, who discovered Mutlu’s music just as both of their careers were taking off. In addition he’s found an advocate with Daryl Hall &amp; John Oates, who invited Mutlu to support a national theater tour.
Mutlu (pronounced moot’-lu) is a first-generation American whose parents moved from Turkey to the United States in the 1970s. He discovered the strength of his voice in high school while singing in a Broadway revue. He liked being on stage but didn’t anticipate pursuing it as a career. However, while earning a marketing degree from Drexel University, he spent innumerable hours practicing guitar, writing songs, and playing open mic nights. Now roughly fifteen years into a career as a professional musician, he believes that his Turkish heritage informs his perspective as an artist.
“From a writing standpoint, having that multicultural background from a young age fuels your creativity in a different way,” he believes. “It makes you empathize with things differently than you would have.”
Whether crooning a love song like “Caramel” (which echoes the Gamble &amp; Huff output of the ‘70s), spreading optimism in “Lifeline,” or sharing a look into his own life as in “Scarred,” Mutlu can bring his diverse catalog together through the power of his voice. He’s been recognized by the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and The Philadelphia Inquirer for his sweet, silky tone. Bruce Warren of WXPN once described Mutlu’s music as “a mix of soul, reggae, world music and folk, all tied together in the singer-songwriter tradition.”
“The vocal connection, that’s the cornerstone of everything I do,” he says. “Everything else is in service of that, performance-wise and production-wise. In R&amp;B and soul music, singers try to really emotionally connect, vocally. It’s about that special thing that can happen when you really dig down deep and give a performance that moves people.”
Mutlu launched his music career on Manhattan Records with the 2008 album, Livin’ It, produced by mentor and friend T Bone Wolk. Since then, he’s developed his international audience through touring, multiple appearances on Live From Daryl’s House, and a steady stream of independent singles and EPs, most recently 2019’s Good Trouble. He cites songs like “Livin’ It,” “Hello Morning,” and “One Life With You” as staples in his set, yet he believes that the show experience is far more than just playing the same material every night.
“For people who know the songs, it’s about giving something more than they would get on the record,” he says. “I tour a lot solo, and for me it’s about going beyond just playing the songs. Over 25 years into his extraordinarily impactful, hit-studded career, Michael Lington made Billboard chart history, building on his legacy of smash singles with “South Bay,” from his 2023 EP “Looking Ahead”. It is the longest running #1 on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Airplay chart and it took only four weeks to reach the pole position, where it stayed for a record setting seven weeks!
Fully embodying the hip, spontaneous action and energy promised in it’s title, Lington’s latest track “On the Scene” – the first lead single from his upcoming album – keeps the party going with a fresh and fiery, funked out and horn drenched jam that perfectly captures the spirit of the early days of contemporary Jazz, but with a modern sound. Co-produced and composed by Lington and veteran saxman, arranger and producer David Mann, the song features the same powerhouse crew that brought the magic to his recent Billboard Top 5, “Moon Goddess” – guitarist Paul Jackson, Jr., bassist Alex Al and drummer Michael White. The number thirteen is cloaked in mysticism, regarded by some cultures as unlucky and revered by others as a sacred good omen or the birth of a new beginning. Saxophonist Paul Taylor’s anticipated new recording and Shanachie debut, It’s A Brand New Day, is his thirteenth recording as a leader. The charming and down-to-earth saxman reveals, “This album in some ways signifies a new cycle for me, as this is my first new recording in three years. The title speaks to my desire to give my fans an optimistic outlook as we approach every brand new day.” The chart-topping saxophonist has enjoyed an enviable career with a string of Billboard #1 hits and collaborations with a genre-crossing lists of musicians including Regina Belle, Maxi Priest, Peabo Bryson, Keiko Matsui. The Rippingtons, Peter White, Euge Groove, Michael Lington, Jamie Jones and Marion Meadows. Taylor confesses, “I simply love creating and making my own music. I am the happiest when I am doing just this. It never gets old.” Danny Weiss, VP of Shanchie’s Jazz A&amp;R, states, “I’ve been an admirer of Paul’s brilliant work dating back to his very first recordings. His superb tone and phrasing are second to none. Paul Taylor is a true icon whose status is well deserved.”
“I am an optimist in every way. Each new year, I just keep trying to do my best, which means playing my horn, staying in shape, touring, and continuing to create,” shares Paul Taylor, who is an avid golfer. He scores an ace on It’s A Brand New Day, showcasing ten tracks of nine originals and one Billie Eilish cover, inspired by a character from one of her favorite movie’s Spirited Away. Taylor’s saxophones conjure a mesmerizing recreation of Eilish’s ethereal vocals. He shares, “I heard this single over the speakers in a store and was like ‘Wow this is pretty cool.” When I heard it again, I knew I had to record my own version on soprano. When I got together with Dino, we put our own spin on it, and I think we paid a beautiful homage to the song. Who knows maybe Billie will hear it and like it!” The feel-good track “Makin’ Moves,” (another Esposito collaboration) features Paul’s fluid and melodic sax juxtaposed against the swinging and driving rhythm section. The hypnotic melody lingers long after the track fades away. The R&amp;B infused and sultry “Where I Want To Be” shines a spotlight on Paul Taylor’s gorgeous tone which is amplified by layered effects. The rhythmic breakdown and soulful groove create the perfect place to be. The buoyant “Inner Circle” is a head-nodding jam while “What You Do For Me,” is a funky dance groove with Paul Taylor’s sax out front set against a funky and gritty rhythm section. It’s A Brand New Day comes to a fitting finale with the sweet, reflective, and tender “Downtime.” Taylor reflects, “Music is like the wallpaper of our lives. There are songs from certain periods of our lives that stay with us. I hope my fans can grab onto some songs on the album that will stay with them and remind them of good times."

With his soulful voice and raw emotion, he has captivated audiences across the country and the globe. A 2023 Blues Award winner, Dylan seamlessly combines classic blues elements with his unique style, creating a sound that’s both timeless and contemporary. His electrifying performances, whether delivering heartfelt ballads or energizing the room with blues anthems, showcase both his gift and his charisma. Night after night, he establishes a meaningful and intimate connection with his listeners.
Mathias Lattin won the 2023 International Blues Challenge and Best Guitarist at the tender age of 20-years old, making him the youngest to win both.
The grandson of NBA Hall of Famer David “Big Daddy” Lattin, he displays his talent on the stage and not the basketball court. A 2020 graduate of Houston’s acclaimed Kinder High School of Performing and Visual Arts, he began his foray into the Houston Blues scene when he was 12 years old. Jonn Del Toro Richardson invited him to attend the weekly Blues jam he hosted at The Big Easy. He garnered national attention when he joined the Keeshea Pratt Band (IBC 2018) in 2020.
