Alexandra discusses how her company stands out and her biggest surprise in the healthcare system.

Alexandra Goodwin, CEO, Janus Choice

Each year up to 32M of hospitals stays end up in needing a transition to post-acute care just in the United States only. Janus Choice provides hospitals an Artificial Intelligence platform that facilitates such transitions in educated and informed way. It provides a highly ethical, unbiased and patient centered match between the patients and post-acute care providers, leading to improved outcomes not only for the patients but for involved providers also.

What does your company do best?

Our platform is so intuitive that it takes little to no time to learn how to use it. It really works for any age or health-literacy level and puts at patients’ and their family’s fingertips the information on providers that would take them months to obtain in any other way, enabling them to make faster and smarter decisions.

If you could change one thing about your product/service or industry-what would it be and why?

The one thing that we would change is the transparency of quality. Availability of information that people can use and understand at the time they need it when making an important decision is something that we all assume happens in all industries. We found out that this is not the case in healthcare when people are making decisions that can affect their quality of life and is the reason why we created our company.

Startups sometimes experience growing pains, what helps you get through these startup cycles?

Hospital sales are very long and complex and it is important to have your own, your investors’ and your customers’ expectations set up properly. What might seem slow to you will be a rocket speed for the hospital.

What has surprised you during your time with this startup?

There are reasons why healthcare operates the way it does today. The one thing that surprised me is the complexity of the healthcare system and how laws can hinder innovation. The other is how siloed it is and how little communication often happens even between hospitals within same health system.

What advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?

Do something that you are passionate about. In every startup, there will be up and down times, during the times when things are not going your way, you need to have a reservoir of energy and determination to draw from to get you through it. Hire people with right attitude! Skills are trainable, attitude is not. Hire people who can scale up with you and not weight you down.
