Local Red Cross Volunteers Assisting in Isaac Relief Efforts

As more than three-dozen local Red Cross volunteers have spent their past days and nights helping those affected by Isaac in the Gulf Coast, some have been able to take a few moments of down time to correspond with the local Red Cross about their experiences.

Terri Violet of St. Peters is in Mississippi, where she is doing disaster assessment work along with Erica Suhling of Carlinville, IL. Jammie Fuller also travelled to Mississippi with the group. She is serving as a case worker; and lives in Ferguson.

These three volunteers were originally deployed to Florida for the Isaac relief efforts, but were transferred to Mississippi where there was a greater need for their services.

Violet sent in these photos from their disaster assessment work. One is a look at a street sinkhole caused by flood waters. The other, of a flooded creek, shows the water line left on the leaves of the trees surrounding the creek.

Other duties of local Red Cross volunteers serving in this deployment have included transportation, logistics, government relations, sheltering, disaster mental health and staff wellness. This disaster relief operation has included more than 3,000 trained Red Cross disaster workers who have been providing food, shelter, relief supplies and comfort to thousands of affected residents in several Gulf Coast states.
