Civil War Union Soldiers Remembered in Flower Laying Ceremony

Local members of the National Society of Daughters of the Union will pay tribute to Union Soldiers in a flower laying ceremony

St. Louis, MO – On October 25, 2014, the DeWitt Clinton Jones Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the Union will honor seven Civil War Union Soldiers during their annual flower laying ceremony at the historic Coldwater Cemetery located at 15290 Old Halls Ferry Road. The public is invited to attend.
β€œIt is an honor to remember St. Louisians who helped to preserve the Union 150 years after the American Civil War ended,” stated Jan Stevens, Regent of the NSDU Chapter. β€œThat is what our organization strives to accomplish in all of our endeavors.”
The soldiers to be honored are as follows: Walter Carrico, Elisha Harris, John W. Harris, James B. Hume, Edward M. Blackburn, Henry Lillard and James M. Thompson. In addition to the flower laying cemetery there will be a reading of each soldier’s life and service to the United States of America.
β€œOur objective as a chapter of the NSDU is to foster a spirit of patriotism, loyalty and love of country and we do so in these ceremonies and by supporting Lincoln Memorial University and our own Civil War Museum in Jefferson Barracks,” said Stevens.
The National Society Daughters of the Union 1861-1865 (NSDU) is a lineage organization founded in New York on October 9, 1912. The Society’s purposes are to honor the men and women who provided support in the fight to preserve the Union and to encourage love of our country.

Membership is open to women 18 years or older who are either direct or collateral descendants of persons who rendered military or civil service to the Union during the years 1861-1865. We will help those who are interested in joining the chapter with researching their lineage if they believe that they have an ancestor who rendered service.
