Conference Swimming, District Wrestling Highlight the Sports Week Ahead

As the winter sports season winds down, the games are taking on more importance. This week, the 12th week of the season, will feature some important action in the pool, on the mat and in the gym.

Let's see what games are on the schedule around St. Peters. 

The Big One

• Who: (Girls Swimming) GAC Swimming Championships
• When/Where: 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, Wednesday, Feb. 8 and Thursday, Feb. 9 at the
• Why the big deal?: Gearing up for the MSHSAA swim meet, the girls swim teams from the GAC North and GAC South will take to the pool at the St. Peters Rec-Plex for the GAC Championships. The meet will be the last time for the swimmers and divers to qualify for State. For those who don't make the State cut, it's the last time this season to shine.

• Who: (Wrestling) Zumwalt East at Districts
• When/Where: 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10 and at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Hannibal High School in Hannibal, MO.
• Why the big deal?: The Missouri State wrestling tournament takes place in two weeks. To get there, Lion wrestlers and the rest of the Class 3, District 2 schools will not to place at the meet in order to continue on with the season. If not, the season is over. 

• Who: (Boys basketball) Zumwalt South vs. Duchene
• When/Where: 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, at South
• Why the big deal?: Zumwalt South's boys basketball team is 5-0 in the GAC North. Duchesne is 5-0 in the GAC North. Yes, friends, the Bulldogs and Pioneers will battle on Friday night for outright first-place in the conference. Fortunately for South, the Bulldogs will have home-court advantage in the contest. 

• Who: (Girls basketball) Lutheran vs. Visitation Academy 
• When/Where: 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, at Lutheran 
• Why the big deal?: The Lutheran girls are 15-5 on the season and 7-1 in the AAA. In 20 games, the Lady Cougars are outscoring the opposition 50.6 to 38.9. On Friday the Lutheran girls will host Visitation in the lone game of the week.

Francis Howell Central

• Who: (Girls basketball) Howell Central vs. Fort Zumwalt West
• When/Where: 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, at Zumwalt West
• Why the big deal?: Howell Central's girls are 2-1 in the GAC South but will have a chance to make some noise on Friday night. The Lady Spartans will battle the first-place Zumwalt West (4-0 in conference play). A win would move Central up in the standings and make them a contender for a conference title.
