Lady Bulldogs Hope to Build On 13-13 Season

Fort Zumwalt South girls soccer team should have an experienced team next season.

The soccer team turned in a respectable season this spring.

But if experience and youthful talent is any indicator, Zumwalt South should be able to increase its win total next year.

“We have a lot to look forward to,” Lady Bulldog head coach Vernon Gano said. “Based on what we did this year, we should by able to build on it next year.”

Zumwalt South compiled a 13-13 overall record and a 2-2 record in the Gateway Athletic North Conference. St. Charles West won the GACN and was followed by Fort Zumwalt East, Duchesne, Fort Zumwalt South, Washington, Fort Zumwalt North, St. Charles and Warrenton.

The Lady Bulldogs lose five seniors this year: defenders Emily Stephan, Elaine Smith, Kaitlin Bean and forwards Amber Lyons and Kendra Clamors. Zumwalt South returns eight juniors: defenders Emily Wagemann, Alyssa Meador and Lauren King, midfielders Shannon Stewart, Morgan Roberts, Kelsey Barkley and Danielle Bailey and forward Amber Lyons.

The Lady Bulldogs season came to an end on with a 2-1 loss to Troy in district play on May 17.

“You never want to have your season end that early,” Gano said. “We thought we would end up being more competitive in the post-season. In that last game we just couldn’t put it away.”

Zumwalt South’s offense put 47 goals on the board this year but its defense gave up 56. Gano said it was hard to give up that many goals and record more wins. He also said that he hopes the Lady Bulldogs’ defense improves next year.

Underclassmen made their mark this season for Zumwalt South. Freshman forward Bridget Stewart led the team’s offense with 12 goals and 10 assists, sophomore midfielder Taylor Wade had eight goals and 10 assists, and sophomore midfielder/defender Brooke Hendrix finished the season with eight goals and two assists. Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Breshears finished the year with a 13-13 record and recorded six shutouts and 149 saves.

Stewart and Clamors were both named to the second team all-GACN Conference girls soccer team. King earned honorable mention. Clamors recorded six goals and four assists this spring.
