LEMAY CHAMBER HONORS AREA AGENCY ON AGING

The Lemay Chamber of Commerce and Midwest Bank Centre honored the Mid-East Area Agency on Aging’s South County Senior Resource Center on October 9 with its annual Community Service Award. The award recognizes the Center’s long track record of serving older adults in the Lemay area.

“It was truly an honor for our center to be recognized for our work in the community,” said Pamela Guest, administrator of the Center. “The number of seniors in this area continues to grow, and the need for our services is greater than ever.”

The South County Senior Resource Center is one of 23 senior centers in four counties operated by the Mid-East Area Agency on Aging (MEAAA). The Center offers a wide range of programming, from assistance with Medicare and health insurance questions, to employment and transportation services, energy and legal assistance, disaster preparedness and assistance with acquiring medical equipment and supplies. MEAAA staff are available to help identify clients’ needs and ensure they can access all the benefits to which they are entitled. “We are here to meet the needs of seniors in whatever ways we can.” Guest added.

MEAAA also operates the region’s largest Meals on Wheels program, bringing nutritious meals and companionships to more than 2,100 home-bound seniors each day, Monday through Friday. “Recent federal and state budget cuts have threatened our ability to meet the growing demand for this service, but we are finding ways to meet this challenge” she added.

In addition, MEAAA now serves as a Marketplace Navigator for the Affordable Care Act.  MEAAA navigators are available to assist with selecting a health plan or completing an application. For more information, call 1-800-Age-6060.
