Long Elementary Dedicates New Outdoor Learning Space
The school's former 'concrete oasis' now serves as an outdoor learning space.
Long Elementary Schoolβs courtyard recently got a big makeover, thanks to the help of students, staff and parents. They hed an official ribbon cutting for the space last month.

For years, Longβs outdoor courtyard had been appropriately named a βConcreteΒ Oasis.β Now, the courtyard is thriving as a warm, colorful and inviting outdoor learning space for children, with four areas, including: βCharacter Court,β a quiet, shaded reading area surrounded by colorful banners; βLindbergh Landing,β with a soft carpet of turf and outdoor chalkboard for classroom lessons; βFree Farm,β which features four raised planter beds, a rain barrel and a composter; and βRock Island,β with updated greenery, a variety of rocks for students to explore, and the pond for Fish.

The project was entirely funded by the donations from parents and the Long PTO, and volunteers performed the majority of renovations.
Β βWe are so grateful to our parents, students and teachers who have created a truly beautiful outdoor learning space that will benefit Long for generations to come,β said Dr. Jana Parker, principal. βI canβt wait to see how our teachers and students will learn and grow in their new outdoor learning environment.β
