National Observances Educate Residents on Bicycling, Police Duties and Public Works

Sunset Hills residents can come together to learn more about the systems and people operating the city.

The month of May has been designated as a time to educate citizens about the benefits of bicycling, duties and responsibilities of the police department and operations of the public works system, as proclaimed by Sunset Hills’ Mayor Nolan in Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting.

Throughout “National Bike and Bicycle Safety Month” there will be various helmet promotion and charity events, races and educational programs to teach citizens how bicycling can be a safe and fun alternative to traveling by automobile. Cycling is not only enjoyable for youngsters, but adults are encouraged to join in during “Bike to Work Week” of May 14-18.

Citizens also are welcomed to learn how the Sunset Hills Police Department plays an important role in safeguarding the rights, freedoms and properties of everyone in the community during “National Police Week” of May 13-19. The city will observe Tuesday, May 15 as “Peace Officers Memorial Day” to honor police officers who have lost their lives or became disabled performing duties to protect and serve their communities.

The observances will come to end with “National Public Works Week” during May 21-25. Residents are urged to become more informed about
the operations of the public works systems and programs such as water, sewers, streets and highways, public buildings and solid waste collection. These systems help to maintain the health, safety and comfort of the community.

Whether bicycling around the city or honoring hometown heroes, May is a great month to learn more about your community and the people that make it special.
