Sunset Hills’ Board of Adjustment Approves Homeowner’s Appeal
In Thursday's meeting, the board of adjustment agreed to allow a homeowner to alter his front yard setback.
Sunset Hills’ Board of Adjustment members unanimously voted to approve Terry Petrovic’s appeal to vary the front yard setback of his property from the required 40 feet to 26 feet. Petrovic intends to build a front porch to extend along the length of his home.
A property setback is a limit set by municipal ordinances to prevent homeowners from building their homes too close to a neighbor’s property.
“I’m really happy with the board’s decision, and I plan to complete all repairs very soon,” Petrovic said. “I hope the front porch adds value to my home and improve the look of the overall neighborhood.”

Petrovic began making repairs to the existing roof peak over his home’s main front door more than 30 days ago with the intentions of building a front porch. He was unaware that he had to obtain permits issued by St. Louis County and received a stop work order. Petrovic has been cooperative in working with local government officials and contractors to complete the home repairs.
Petrovic said all of his neighbors are in support of his home improvements and believe a covered porch will add valuable curb appeal to the home and neighborhood.
